Yesterday I finished watching The Queen's Gambit (I'm late to the party I know) and I could talk about how I as a (kind of) chess enthusiast really enjoyed it BUT

Beth Harmon is so aroallo you can't convince me otherwise, "oh but what about townes" shut up shut up (/lh) she met townes when she was like 13, she saw a handsome guy that was nice to her and went "is this what love feels like" no Beth physical attraction + liking his personality ≠ love, I've been there trust me.

It's just so refreshing, you never see Beth be curious about the romantic aspects of relationship (holding hands, dates,gifts) but you do see her being curious about the physical aspects (like when she thinks back on the occasions when she saw couples kissing/making out)

And afterwards, the people who she ends up having "fun" with don't become her romantic interests, they become her friends, people who genuinely care about her and her well being (except random college guy #1 but who cares about him anyways)

In the last episode, when Townes comes back? I was so tense, "yeah this is it, he's gonna say he loves her and get together at the last second god fucking dammit", and then the relief I felt when he said "you know I always wanted us to be friends"

I don't know I guess what I'm trying to say is that I'm glad her happy ending didn't involve a romance at all.

1x1 Roleplay Request!

Hi there! So I had a tumblr account for almost ten years, but for some odd reason tumblr decided to just refuse to let me log into it so I had to start fresh :( Now with places like Amino and Quotev becoming obsolete for rp partners, I was kind of lost on where to look next. So, I'm not sure if this is going to work, but here I am!

This account is still pretty new so I'll have more posts about my rules and characters as time goes on, but for now, I just wanted to make a big masterlist request that includes my rules and fandoms!

Rules

I am a literate-advanced literate roleplayer! I can work with semi-lit or novella sometimes, but my replies are usually between 150-350 words per character, but can that change depending on context and setting. Proper punctuation and spelling are VERY important!

I don't have many strong triggers, and I can handle implied or referenced subjects such as s/a, ab*se, substance use, and g*re for the sake of character/plot background and development! However, I will refuse to glorify or write any of those topics among other disturbing ones in a romanticised light.

PLEASE be 18+! I am 20 years old and am not comfortable roleplaying with minors, even if it's SFW!

I primarily only do romance themed roleplays, but the subgenre can range from slice of life or historical! I do not enjoy horror or apocalyptic roleplay plots.

Katara / ATLA – yeah, gasp, no Azula, I always say I love them both equally, but I’ll go with Katara this time. A lot of the times, I will find the good girl too plain or boring, but that couldn’t be further from the truth with Katara. Katara has too many good character traits for me to list, but she also comes with plenty of flaws, painful childhood trauma and some unresolved anger issues. Put together, it makes for the kind of complex character that I always become deeply attracted to.

Adora / SPOP - again, no Catra, gasp, but I wanted to continue with the good girl vibe, and Adora definitely has a lot of similarities with Katara, good girl with issues. I would say that Adora is a lot more patient than Katara, and it takes a lot more to push her to the breaking point. Also, Adora has the kind of martyr complex that’s not very obvious in Katara.

Dawn Summers / BTVS – okay, I’m cheating a little here, normally I would go with Faith or Buffy here, but @juniperhillpatient already picked Faith, and Buffy is such an obvious choice. And I do love Dawnie because I always stand up for the underdog. Coming into the show the way she did, having all this conflict with established characters, turned many (horrible and wrong) fans against her, but I want to say that every issue she ever had was totally valid. Just thinking about what this kid was put through in S5 is still crazy.  

Elizabeth Harmon / The Queen’s Gambit – okay, maybe it’s just me, but watching one of my favorite actresses portray a stunningly beautiful young woman who destroys the patriarchy at the chess board meant everything to me. She also has one of the worst, if not THE worst childhoods on this list, and even the foster family that took her in treated her so coldly. Raised with no love in her life, Beth struggles with empathy and finds it very hard to form relationships.

Aeryn Sun / Farscape – for the crime of conceiving a child out of love, her mother was given the choice to kill her lover or her child. She killed Aeryn’s father so that the child could live. Aeryn was then brought up by the state, in a heavily militarized society, pretty much bred for war. Over the course of the show, Aeryn slowly and reluctantly learns the value of forming genuine emotional connections and experiencing all these ‘weak’ feelings.

Susan Ivanova / Babylon 5 – first openly (or at least very heavily implied) lesbian – or bi – character that I came across in any TV show. Her romance with Talia is deeply tragic and captivating. Susan is an unflinchingly loyal and courageous character, but I also remember really appreciating her snarky sense of humor (as well as her stunning looks, ofc)

Angua von Uberwald / Discworld – I had to include Angua because her character concept is just so fascinating. The City Watch books are my favorite in the series, and while I love all the characters of the Watch, Angua is a personal favorite. It’s always fun to watch her balancing her werewolf nature with the demands of her job and just fitting into human society and having meaningful relationships. She also has very tense relationship with her family who are way more into traditional werewolf lifestyle of hunting humans for sport.

Shadowheart / Baldur’s Gate 3 – it wasn’t easy to decide between the BG3 ladies, but it had to be Jenevelle. It’s so hard to summarize her, because you have to first establish which Shadowheart you’re talking about. Taken as a young child, Shadowheart had her memories erased by the worshippers of Shar, twisting her into a disciple of their cruel deity. This is why when you begin traveling with Shadowheart, she will usually respond well or at least won’t denounce evil and cruel choices, but even then, you can see occasional glimpses of another, gentler personality underneath, one that someone has tried very hard to erase. Helping her denounce Shar, allowing her to reclaim her memories and find redemption is maybe the most rewarding experience I’ve had in any video game. She’s also beautifully voiced and has an amazing sense of humor, even if she doesn’t verbally obliterate people the way Minthara does.

 Audrey Horne / Twin Peaks – I guess Audrey would be the femme fatale of this list. She’s the spoiled brat with the rich daddy, used to get whatever she wants. She’s pretty manipulative and enjoys toying with people. Audrey’s big flaw is that she thinks she’s more mature and cleverer than she actually is, so she occasionally will get herself into a lot of trouble by not thinking things through. She is a really fun character, though, especially when she’s at her spoiled worst at the start of the show.

Rachel Amber / Life is Strange – I wanted to put Rachel after a character from Twin Peaks, because Rachel is so obviously inspired by… no, not by Audrey, but by Laura Palmer. Both of them have this outward glamor girl appearance, but underneath it, there’s a dangerous fascination with the ugly and filthy aspects of human experience. Rachel is also taught by many to be extremely manipulative (which I don’t necessarily agree with). It’s true that Rachel needs attention as much as she needs air. In many ways, Rachel is like a social chameleon. She just effortlessly makes people see in her whatever it is they want to see.

I go by jess, and I’m really excited to be here! this is my first group in a year, and in that time tumblr decided to fuck around with its whole ass interface so (upside smiley), we're on a learning curve rn with that. but otherwise, I’m still really excited to be here and to plot! growing up.

born in miami, florida to her single mother, leticia "lettie" rivera. they were a very happy family, if not at all rich or stable. lettie was a young single mom who had a penchant for two things: moving, and falling in love. as such, throughout carmen's childhood, the riveras never stayed in one place for more than two years.

as a child, carmen didn't mind because lettie did a wonderful job of depicting their travels as "chasing adventures," romancing their travels as a grand roadtrip the two were embarking on as they traveled across the nation. in reality, they moved because lettie faced one two many heartbreaks, not enough heartbreaks, or she heard of a betty paying job somewhere else.

a key way that lettie romanced their situation was through art. art could be found anywhere, created by anyone (*cough* it was a free medium! *cough*) and was a perfect form of self-expression and a great source of entertainment. as such, lettie and carmen bonded over all the different art they came across in every city they went (very much like gilmore girls' lorelai & rory's shared love of film)

all good things must come to an end, however, and carmen was disillusioned by their way of life after lettie got involved with a rich man and carmen was placed in a rich school for a year, full of rich, snobby kids who had nothing nice to say about carmen or her mother, and were quick to point out everything weird and different about their way of life. disillusioned, she couldn't help but begin to see the faults as well. slowly, she recognized that she was going to end up just like her mother if she didn't stop idolizing her and start taking shit more seriously, and so carmen's behavior shifted.

with a new determination, carmen made it a goal to not end up like her mother. that goal had two major objectives: a college degree and a good career. as her family continued to move from place to place, carmen stopped prioritizing making friends and relationships, and instead put her effort into making better grades and saving money. her breezy, mirthful personality morphed as she got older, giving way to a snarky, aloof demeanor.

carmen convinced lettie to settle for her last two years of high school, so in the summer of 2003, the riveras came and stayed in angelwoods. carmen ended up staying for college just because it was the most convenient option for her. lettie left town soon after carmen moved into her dorm.

oh and during high school school she worked two part time jobs - nights at the movie theater during the week, and the day shift at the local community rec center.

so!! small town reputation before college: say hello to the floozy mother and her unapproachable daughter everyone!!

college.

if carmen tried to keep to herself in high school, she did the exact opposite in college. she was an art history major with intentions to be an art dealer

that meant she needed connections baby!

anyone from a financially well-off family, with an interest in art/a family who had an interest in art, or on a clear financially successful path themselves were all people carmen very much got to know during college.

listen, is she a gold digger? no. more like gold detector. her future career depended on having a network of people to invest in future galleries or buy future art pieces from her future clients. it depended on her getting her foot in the door by getting jobs in galleries and being invited to galas and curator events. that can't happen if all her friends are poor like her!!

anyways, college was a pivotal time for her because in pursuit of fostering good connections, getting invites, and getting job opportunities, carmen found out she was not as.... morally righteous? as she thought she was

aka she screwed people over (literally and figuratively) to get to where she is today

and tbh, outside of a few ruined relationships here and there, it was all pretty worth it because she did develop a lot of good connections in college, leading to her getting a job at an up-and-coming gallery in denver out of college.

but like, oof, the personal cost to do that. not great, not great.

so she goes to denver! spends a year at the gallery and it's great, but she ends up moving to chicago after getting a better job opportunity there.

spends 6 years in the art world in chicago, builds an increasingly bigger and better network of artists and buyers, gains more skill working at different galleries and with different private buyers, curates a couple shows herself even before she's off again in 2015, this time to the big big leagues: nyc!

in a couple years, she was able to secure herself a very nice, financially stable job working as an art dealer for an investor conglomerate, finding pieces for their individual private collections while also working as the dealer for their well known art gallery in brooklyn. it's a cushy position, better than anything she's had in her previous years, and she's feeling really good about where she's ended up.

and of course it's then that she gets the invitation for her college reunion and is like - well shit.

B A C K G R O U N D

it came as a shock to many when anson vance, renowned pureblood extremist, married the halfblood, laurel callaghan. some thought he married below his station, others believed she settled. but the simple truth of it was that two people, from different backgrounds and with opposing personalities, got caught up in a whirlwind romance and fell in love. it was actually beautiful while that love lasted.

laurel gave birth to their first child soon after their nuptials. a few years later, emmeline was born, and it was around that time that their marriage had started to disintegrate. they argued more, fought more. eventually those fights escalated into physical altercations, courtesy of anson.

so it wasn't that surprising when the target of that violence shifted towards their children as well. a backhanded slap when emmeline got too mouthy. a hand tangled in her hair while her father screamed in her face. when she was shoved to the floor in the middle of an argument. the only solace to be found in those cold halls were emmeline's mother, older sibling, and her eventual younger sibling.

and then she got her letter and almost everything changed.

being at hogwarts felt like a haven. while the school wasn't a hundred percent safe, she could walk down the halls without dread settling into her stomach or constantly looking over her shoulder. she found peace, to a degree, despite that familiar sickening feeling she'd get whenever a letter came from home.

it was off and on like that for a few years. being at home vs being at school. em would always rationalize that she only had to make it through a few months before she would be back at her safe space, and soon her younger sibling would be there as well. but eventually, during her fourth year, things boiled over. anson and laurel had gotten into the worst fight they'd ever had; anson had gotten violent. and emmeline…she got in his way.

it wasn't like she hadn't been hit by her father before, but this time was different. she was no longer a little girl nor was she completely defenseless. she pulled out her wand and pointed it at him, the threat clear. maybe he was too shocked to respond or maybe it truly became clear to him what he had done to his family. whatever the reason, he backed off and left the room.

the next day, laurel and the kids moved in with her parents. she filed for divorce soon after. she'll never say, but it was that moment that em realized what she wanted to do. she wanted to protect people, to be an auror.

Also, I never stopped to think about how it’s even funnier that Benny was beating adult opponents at the age of eight when you remember that he’s played by Thomas Brodie-Sangster, who always looks about 2/3 of his actual age. 😂 As if they wouldn’t have been humiliated enough already, they’d be beaten by a kid who looks five instead of eight!
